Theta activity from frontopolar cortex, mid-cingulate cortex and anterior cingulate cortex shows different roles in cognitive planning performance

چکیده

Cognitive planning, the ability to develop a sequenced plan achieve goal, plays crucial role in human goal-directed behavior. However, specific of frontal structures planning is unclear. We used novel and ecological task, that allowed us separate period from execution period. The spatio-temporal dynamics EEG recordings showed induced progressive sustained increase frontal-midline theta activity (FM?) over time. Source analyses indicated this was generated within prefrontal cortex. Theta right mid-Cingulate Cortex (MCC) left Anterior Cingulate (ACC) were correlated with an time needed for elaborating plans. On other hand, Frontopolar cortex (FP) exhibited negative correlation required executing plan. Since reaction times correct responses, FP might be associated efficiency accuracy making Associations between MCC ACC may reflect high cognitive demand due engagement attentional control conflict monitoring implementation. In turn, association performance participation brain region successfully self-generated

Anterior cingulate cortex regulation of sympathetic activity.

the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is active in such a wide variety of cognitive and emotional tasks has become an important issue in recent research. In this issue of Brain, Critchley et al. (2003) report changes in heart rate in both cognitive and motor tasks related to the strength of activation in the ACC. They interpret their ®ndings as supporting a view that the anterior cingulate is inv...

Application of magnetic resonance spectroscopy for evaluating metabolic alteration in anterior cingulate cortex in Alzheimer's disease

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia worldwide. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often the prodromal stage to AD. Most patients with MCI harbor the pathologic changes of AD and demonstrate transition to AD at a rate of 10–15% per year. Accumulating evidence indicates that the asymmetry changes of left and right brain have happened in the early stage of A...

Cognitive and emotional influences in anterior cingulate cortex.

Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a part of the brain's limbic system. Classically, this region has been related to affect, on the basis of lesion studies in humans and in animals. In the late 1980s, neuroimaging research indicated that ACC was active in many studies of cognition. The findings from EEG studies of a focal area of negativity in scalp electrodes following an error response led to...

The anterior cingulate cortex and pain processing

The neural network that contributes to the suffering which accompanies persistent pain states involves a number of brain regions. Of primary interest is the contribution of the cingulate cortex in processing the affective component of pain. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent data obtained using novel behavioral paradigms in animals based on measuring escape and/or avoidance of a ...

Human anterior cingulate cortex neurons encode cognitive and emotional demands.

The cortical mechanisms and substrates of cognitive and emotional demands are poorly understood. Lesion studies and functional imaging implicate the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The caudal ACC (cACC) has been implicated in cognitive processes such as attention, salience, interference, and response competition, mostly on the basis of neuroimaging results. To test the hypothesis that individu...
